Until recently, companies trying to measure AI visibility had to repeat prompts, capture answers, and work backwards from the links they could see.
Microsoft is beginning to expose an earlier part of that chain. In February 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools launched AI Performance in public preview, showing citations, cited pages, and grounding queries across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and selected partner integrations. Microsoft Clarity made Citations generally available in May and added Query Topics in August to group large sets of grounding queries into themes [1][2][3][5].
This gives GEO teams a new category of first-party retrieval data.
The boundary matters, however: a grounding query can show which retrieval phrase connected an AI system to cited content. It does not fully explain why that page won the final citation.

Two metrics are particularly easy to overstate.
Citation Rate uses eligible grounding-query instances as its denominator, not every AI question. Share of Authority compares citation distribution within the overlapping query set where the domain participated; it is not an absolute share of an industry or the entire AI web [3][4].
These metrics are useful for trends and like-for-like comparisons. They should not be turned into a permanent, universal “AI ranking score.”

IndexNow can notify participating search engines when URLs are added, updated, or deleted. It supports single URLs and batches of up to 10,000 URLs, but an HTTP 200 response only confirms receipt. It does not guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, or citation [7].
Review the same topics on a fixed schedule. Compare Citation Rate, cited pages, Share of Authority, AI referral traffic, and business outcomes. A one-day citation spike is not a success case; a sustained, page-level trend is more useful evidence.
